OK, I’m a little late with this (in fact it’s a little late right now). After getting off the phone with you, we left to go to the dog park to have a little fun. Right before we got to the park, Luna threw up her diner. Not good. We took her into the park and she vomited a few more times (mostly frothy, slimey stuff), so, we left and headed home. She vomited a couple more times on the way while we debated on taking her to the emergency vet. We decided not to take any chances, so we made a left and headed for the vet.
Let me digress a little. Last week, Luna had pooped (and peed) in her crate in the afternoon. She went almost 2 weeks without having an accident and when she did, it was always in the afternoon. So, last Friday, we were going to try leaving them in out in the front room so they had access to the doggie door. That went well (especially since I got off early and they were only alone for about an hour). We decided to do the same today… only, they were out “free” for about 3 hours. When I got home, they had been chewing on chunks of the Bird of Paradise (BoP) plant we had on our patio (’had’ being the key word there). The BoP is known to cause gastritus (upset stomach and the like) but that’s usually caused by the seeds and flowers (both of which are absent on our plant). I didn’t think too much about it and cleaned up the mess they made on the living room floor (oh the joys of puppies).
They took her vitals and examined her. Right about the time the tech asked if she had any diareha, she pooped on the exam room floor. The first half solid, promptly followed by a rush stinky, runny stuff. They took her back and took some x-rays to see if there might be something there. Sure enough, there was a little something in her stomach. Not quite sure what it is yet, but we’re hoping that it will pass (along with the gas that can be seen in her intestine).
Of course the vet wanted to keep her over night and put her on fluids and Pepcid and more x-rays… to the tune of (this is the estimate now) $900 - $2000! That’s not including the possibility that the issue may require surgery (which I think is highly unlikely). We told them no thanks and that we will monitor her throughout the night and take her to our normal vet first thing in the morning for follow-up x-rays.
So, tonight has been, well, interesting (and expensive).
